A postscript to document the finished tarmac driveway - in the end we decided against the chip-and-tar surface as it seems less durable. The skies opened on Friday, so they were only able to do the upper flat section, and returned today to do the rest of the drive.
Birmingham received something like 70 mm of rain over the weekend - Alvechurch less but still quite a lot (perhaps 41 mm according to an on-line rain gauge half a mile away). The rains washed a load of the silt from the recently laid turf into the recently cleaned pond - which is now a brown muddy colour. Hopefully this will not happen too often, once the grass is properly rooted into the soil. They also washed a good deal of the newly spread grass seeds down the banks, but at least we won't need to water any plants for a day or two!
