Storm Aileen was a non-event, and only blew over a few of the rafter extensions waiting to be painted. But over breakfast I solved the mystery (for me) of why a flat roof laid between two horizontal curved walls becomes convex.
If you put your teacup in the centre of your cereal bowl, the cup edge represents the high inner wall and the bowl edge the low outer wall. Putting a knife between the two and sliding it sideways demonstrates the convex curve. For completeness, put a teacup at the bottom of a deep saucepan and you can see the lower roof will be concave. Simples!
