Last weekend Stephanie and I went to a reclamation yard north of Birmingham, hoping to find a slab of stone for our hearth. Although we didn't find a piece full of amazing fossils (as I had optimistically imagined), they had some nice slate. This comes all the way from Brazil - at a fraction of the price of slate that comes all the way from Wales or the Lake District! I spent the afternoon sanding down the edges and corners.
