I am getting to grips with the roof tiles. These are made from recycled plastic, but give a pretty good impression of slate, and are much easier to use. You can cut them with a saw, nail them easily, they are lighter than slate - and they are cheaper than the real thing.
I also discovered that I can heat them with a heat-gun and gently bend them into shape to deal with the odd shape I ended up making at the edge of the lean-to: not something you can easily do with Welsh slate!
I'm nailing the slates to the battens and then trimming off the bits along the hip ridge with a circular saw (probably not in the Health and Safety guidelines).
